Summer is a coming in...

Summer is a coming in…..

Well I don’t know about the rest of the country but, here in the South East of England, this week has been positively sweltering!

It’s time to dust off the bar-b-Que, put out the sun shades and curl up on a sun lounger with a good book and a glass of something cold.

I can remember when I was in primary school that we used to take our work outside on lovely sunny days, find a lovely shady spot under a tree, and we always did really cool activities like painting, drawing, activity quizzes or just listening to a good story.

Good things don’t have to be complicated to be good! In a former life when I was training to be a primary school teacher, I was observing in a local school with a teacher who received an award for excellence in teaching. He had a motto for his pupils – ‘Keep it simple, Do it well’. This sentiment is very easily transferable to all areas of life.

So…where does all this rambling fit with Interlibrary loans?

Well – as a consequence of one of the presentations from Interlend 2015 we decided to simplify our processes and procedures to try and produce a better, more effective, more efficient service. After Interlend 2016 we here at Essex University ILL are again going to implement some of the ideas and initiatives that we heard about to continue that move for improvement.

Summer is a great time here for these kinds of activities as the pace of life does get a little slower and there is more time for reflection and development.

If you would like some inspiration, motivation or just a distraction from the summer heat check out this year’s presentations from Interlend on the FIL website

Keep cool everyone and have a great summer!

Sandra (current Chair of FIL)

To Copy or Not to Copy

At this year's annual FIL conference Interlend 2016, there was probably a collective gasp in horror as we found out that we, as ILL providers, perhaps should not have been sending copies of book chapters to others libraries for their reader's private study purposes.

As you can imagine we were a little concerned as there seemed to be a little confusion over this matter and we did have two conflicting ideas surrounding this very important topic. However, today I received some clarification from Graham Titley that he asked me to share via the FIL Blog so here it is:

Following Conference it was agreed that I would investigate the situation in regards to the advice about copying and supplying from books. As a result I have an apology to make!
As part of the presentation I mentioned that the Copyright Design and Patents Act (s41) prevented the copying and supply of book chapters. I have since discovered that this section was not meant to apply to document delivery/Inter-Library loans despite the words used in the text.
It was intended to allow libraries to supply copies of part or the whole of a work to another library if you could not reasonably find out who could give permission – a sort of allowed sharing of ‘orphan works’.
You can now breathe a sigh of relief because s42A allows libraries to make and supply a copy of one article in any one issue of a periodical or a reasonable proportion of any other published work - providing a declaration/request is received. (Note: it does not state chapter only ‘reasonable proportion’!).
The section goes on to state that any term of a contract (or licence) that purports to prevent or restrict the doing of an act that would be lawful under this section is unenforceable. This means that providing you think the proportion is ‘reasonable’ you CAN utilise all e-resources to fulfill ILL/Document Supply requests for end-users, regardless of the products terms.
So carry on what you are doing!
My thanks to Kate for prompting the re investigation and to Mala for also reminding me that I had done some investigating early in 2015 which I had forgotten!
I really enjoyed Conference and congratulate the Committee and my fellow speakers for providing a well-run, engaging and informative programme. My apologies to you all for my error in interpretation!
I will supply a corrected version of the talk and ‘quiz’ slides – so please make sure the versions you download from the FiL website (when available) all state ‘corrected 1st July 2016’ on the title slide.
Regards
Graham

Many thanks Graham - collective sigh of relief all round! Phew

To go or not to go.....

‘To Go or Not To Go (to Conference)….That is the question!’

We have had much celebration recently over the anniversaries of both Shakespeare’s birth and death (reputedly on the same date) that I felt, as some-one working in a  library,  I ought to pay a little homage to the Bard. My homage was slightly tongue-in-cheek (apologies to all Shakespeare fans out there).

There is not much time left to book your place for Interlend 2016 and a little bird has told me that if you do it by the end of this week you should still receive the early bird rate. The FIL conference is a great place to meet colleagues who share the same role and the same daily issues. It’s a chance to find out what is going on in the world of ILL and to find new and sometimes more creative ways of working. Find out more from the FIL website:
http://www.forumforinterlending.org.uk/

We also hold the AGM on the second day of conference where we on the committee give a roundup of the year, say goodbye to any outgoing committee members and hopefully welcome some new committee members ready to tackle next year’s FIL events.

So… the other point of my ramblings today is to ask all those who have an interest in the works of FIL, whether you are coming to the conference or not, to seriously consider (I know – a split infinitive!) joining the committee. I know that we will definitely be needing committee members this coming year who will ultimately lead the committee
through the years that follow. The committee needs people who are interested in the work of FIL and who would be willing to take on specific roles from time to time. We would really appreciate anyone coming forward who has a particular skill in accounts who would be willing to consider taking over as treasurer in due course.

There are other specific roles on the committee which may appeal so there’s lots of scope for you to showcase your talents. You don’t have to be attending conference to put yourself forward for a place on the committee, just let me know in advance that you would like to be considered. If anyone would like any further information or just a chat about what goes on please do contact me sandrad@essex.ac.uk or contact the committee generally on fil.committee@gmail.com .

Look forward to seeing you or hearing from you!
